It has been so long since I have posted, I feel like I need to introduce myself again! My family and I have completed our move and are getting settled into our new home. We have been busy with unpacking, decorating, and home projects. We have been taking time to enjoy the beautiful lake in our backyard too, so it hasn't been ALL work. Thank you so much for your patience with me over the past few months and thank you for respecting my family time too. I know many of you are eager to get a date reserved on the calendar for upcoming portraits. My break from photography has really given me a renewed passion and I am excited!

I have a few technical difficulties to work through (hopefully soon!). Comcast doesn't service us out here (I told you, I was in the COUNTRY!) and my email was setup through them, so I am working on getting that setup correctly. Right now, it appears that I can receive emails, but can't send them out. I will post once that is functioning again.

I have made a change to my session pricing and that can be found on my website's Portraits -> Pricing page. Weekday sessions are still $99 with six free 5x7s, but I have increased my weekend session fee. Please be aware of this when scheduling.

One other policy that I will be enforcing is that once we schedule a specific date, I will collect the non-refundable session fee as a retainer for the date within FOUR days. This has always been my policy, but I wasn't very good at asking for this type of commitment from my clients. I hope you will all understand why I need to do this.

Again, I am so excited to work with all of you! Once my technical issues are resolved, I will be contacting you, if you have expressed interest for a session this summer or fall. Once that is complete, if there are any other open dates, I will publish them online. Thank you!

My last post was not really in February, was it? That is horrible and I feel the need to explain! :)
The past few months have been a blur - both professionally and personally. I will share.

Professionally, I finished my first official year of photography! The year was more than I could have ever imagined and thank all of my amazing clients for your support and trust. Because I ended up much busier than I planned for, I got a tad behind in the "behind-the-scenes business stuff", which apparently is important to the government. I love having my own business, but learned the hard way how easy it is to fall behind on all the bookkeeping and had to seek help filing my taxes this year. But the great news is that I AM DONE, all filed and legal! What a relief to have survived that process. I consider myself a fairly intelligent individual, but if one more form would have gotten thrown at me, I think I would have cried.

Personally, my husband and I finally decided to move and relocate our family. We looked at the ages of our kids and decided we needed to do it now or never. We are both indecisive people when it comes to big, life-altering decisions, so this was a major accomplishment for us! To make a very long story short, we have found a house that we are excited to move into (just 25 miles north), we sold our house and survived (barely!) having our house on the market while three lil' tornadoes live here and we are now very busy purging 11 years worth of "stuff" and packing! Any free time we may have had has been filled with school tours, childcare interviews, plans for transferring pediatricians, dentists, speech teachers, job locations, and this list goes on! It is a fun time of anticipation, but also an exhausting one.

Due to the things going on personally in my life right now, I have made the decision to not book any additional sessions (sessions already scheduled are still on!) until after our move, the kids are settled, and I have had time to setup and test all of my equipment at the new home. During our transition between the sale of our home and moving into the next, I will not have access to my calibrated monitor for post processing, etc. Tentatively, the soonest I would schedule sessions would be late summer. If this impacts your plans, I am truly sorry. But, I would rather be cautious and 100% confident that I am focused on delivering the highest quality prints than to be preoccupied and unfocused. I hope you understand and thank you for your continued support.

Last night, Gavin's (my son) hockey team got the opportunity of a lifetime! They got to see all the MN Wild players and play a short hockey game between period 1 and 2. The experience was awesome to say the least!!! I had the opportunity to photograph the experience for the team and will have LOTS of images to share. I was able to photograph from the player's bench and even seized the opportunity to capture this one of Backs. Suddenly, my hubby thinks my photography is the most wonderful thing... guess I should have pursued sports photography instead of portrait photography!!! I have never had him looking over my shoulder on the PC drooling over my images! :)

I know I haven't had a lot of free time to share my current work, but I HAD to share an image of this lil' man. He was dressed so stinkin' adorable and has the most amazing eyes! You may recognize him from previous posts. I have had the honor of capturing him at 6 months, 12 months, and now 18 months. I am blessed!

My favorite images of all time are close-ups like this one, with the focus on the subject's eyes. They say 'eyes are the windows to the soul' and I would have to agree.

I am often asked why I prefer to shoot with natural light (since it can be more time consuming to process) and this image is the reason why. If I would have flashed artificial light at this lil' cutie, I never would have been able to get this shot. I aim to create images that focus on the subject's eyes and give a glimpse into their soul. Capturing shots like this overwhelm me with emotion and I am so blessed to do what I do.
And hands and feet at this age are always a must to capture!

I thought this blog could use some humor and so I share this story and image. I recently purchased this new black and white damask backdrop and wanted to "play" with it. It was too dark to experiment with natural light (which I prefer), so I got my studio lights setup and asked my youngest child to "go throw something black on", so he could be my guinea pig. By the time I got everything setup, he came down with THIS t-shirt on (that he got from his aunt). And he literally threw it on, right over his pajamas! To finish the look, we gave him a "faux hawk" (that is a real term - google it, if you don't believe me). I clicked away and he was like a little puppet giving me a spectrum of expressions. Technically, these images have flaws. But, with my mommy goggles on, I truly love them, they will always remind me of this ad-hoc session of pure laughter and giggles and that's the value of photographs.

I absolutely love the variety of being a portrait photographer. Every session is as unique as the subject(s)! I had the honor of capturing images of this beautiful young woman at such an exciting time of her life. She was so sweet and earned a blue ribbon for being such a good sport! We shot downtown for 2 hours in the Fall weather, that felt much more like Winter! And look... she even wore short-sleeves for part of the session - what a trooper! Thank you!

I had a fun session on Sunday with this super sweet doggy and his beautiful lady, who happens to also be a good friend of mine. We got some great shots and I will have more to share in a few weeks. With every session, as I am preparing and planning for it, I get an image in my mind that I want to try to create at the session. For this session, I wanted to create a timeless image of the pooch on my newest prop: an antique trunk that was my fathers (thank you, Dad! I told you I would use it!). I have been contacted by many people asking if I do sessions with extended families and the answer is YES! My session fee includes up to 3 people and then I charge a fee per additional person. But, I have decided to put a maximum on it! The additional charge maximum will be $50, no matter how many extra people you add to the session. [insert applause here]
And I was so inspired by some recent sessions, that I gathered up my family last weekend for a family portrait and I am so glad that I did! Considering we had to use the self-timer and had 5 kids between the ages of 7 weeks and 7 years, I am happy with the way they turned out! Capture your family at this stage before it slips away!

Hello! I am posting to address many questions I have been asked regarding holiday cards and my session availability for the remainder of 2009. Every year, I am reminded how quickly summer goes and in the blink of an eye, it is time to start thinking about the holidays and holiday cards! As much as I love Christmas, it is hard to think about it when it is still in the 70s.

Q: Will you be offering mini-sessions this Fall?
A: Unlike last year, I have decided not to offer mini-sessions this year. I know they are convenient to get one updated portrait to use for holiday cards, but they don’t provide any of the other benefits that I am proud to offer as a custom portrait photographer. I love relaxed, unrushed sessions where I have the time to get to know you, because when I have the opportunity to help you relax and let your true personality shine in front of the camera, I can see the difference in the final images. I love offering the full portrait experience, from capturing you and your loved ones in a natural and comfortable environment… to providing you with a variety of high-quality images to choose from… to offering unique and affordable products, such as the popular Hardcover Albums. For these reasons, I have decided against offering mini-sessions.

Q: Are you offering holiday cards this year?
A: Yes, absolutely! I love designing cards and am excited to offer high-quality, original designs at fair prices. I will be offering both photographic and press-printed cards, as in previous years. Designs and special offers coming soon.

Q: What time are your sessions?
A: It depends. One of the reasons I absolutely love creating images with natural light is because I haven’t found a studio light that can replicate the amazing beauty of natural sunlight. As we enter Fall, sunset times are continually creeping earlier and earlier and we need to consider that when planning your portrait session. Because I only book one session per day, you will have flexibility in selecting a session time. The ideal time of day is either early in the morning or a few hours before sunset. When the sun is low in the sky, it produces the most flattering and gorgeous light for portraits. We want to avoid times when the sun is directly overhead. Although relying on nature’s elements adds a sense of uncertainty to your session, I am constantly reminded that the end result is worth it!

Q: When can I schedule a session? Do I need to email you?
A: As Divine Digital Design grows, I am aware of the need of a published calendar of available session dates and hope to implement that over the next few months. In the meantime, I will post open dates on my blog below (and do my best to keep them up-to-date!). If they have a status of “pending”, it means that the date is tentatively scheduled, but I haven’t received the session fee yet, which firms the commitment.

Let me start by saying that senior portraits have definitely evolved over the years! I remember getting my senior pictures done in a stuffy studio, using the same backdrops and props (if you call a papasan chair a prop) as everyone else in my school. Those boring days are GONE! Today's seniors want custom, on-location sessions that produce unique and glamorous images! I love that each session is different! I recently had the opportunity to photograph this beautiful senior with fellow photographer, Shawna Kremer. We had a blast together!!! Here are just a few images for now...

I am excited to share images of this lil' cutie and his parents who absolutely adore him! I photographed him at 3 months (here) and 6 months (here) and now he is already ONE! What a blessing to watch him change and grow. And his parents are two of the most gracious people I know. After the session, I received an email from his dad that said this:
"Thanks Jodi -- fantastic job as always. Your work gets rave reviews from everyone who sees the pictures, and we really enjoy working with you. Thanks for capturing our family so richly."

I have been blessed with so many fun sessions recently! This family was a blast to spend time with and notice they were all adults, which was a nice change of pace for me. They actually listened to me and I didn't need to dance like a monkey to get them to smile! I am so grateful that they made this session a priority before their daughter moves to Texas. My desire is that these images captured the spirit of their special family at this stage of life.

I have never received more emails than this week - so many of you wondering how the wedding went that I photographed last weekend! I feel so loved :)
The bride is a fellow photographer and I was one of three photographers (the others were the very talented Shawna Kremer and Kathy King). Everything went so perfect, we had a gorgeous bride, a handsome and cooperative groom, AND gorgeous weather! The ceremony was outdoors on an island along the river. I have only processed two images so far, so that will have to hold you over for now...

I absolutely love helping clients share their good news! I have been designing quite a few cards and announcements and wanted to share the most recent. I absolutely loved how these looked and felt when printed - they were press-printed on pearl paper, which has an amazing shimmer to it. Unfortunately, the sheen and quality of this paper couldn't be captured in a photo, but trust me that if you were holding this card, you would have oooh'd and ahhh'd. :)

I am excited to finally share my fun news…
A neat opportunity has presented itself and I will have the opportunity to collaborate with Shawna Kremer Photography on the first, of hopefully many, "special projects". For this project, we will be shooting on-location for two full days at the Pottery Barn Kids store at the Galleria in Edina, MN. We were hired by Precious Time Photography to be the photographers for Pottery Barn’s Spring Promotion: Customers making a qualifying purchase within a defined time period, qualify for a free mini-session that will take place in the Pottery Barn Kids store on May 13th and May 14th.

{keeping busy}

I know I haven't been blogging very frequently, because I have been keeping very busy with some special projects. I have been working on many card designs - primarily for graduation announcements, but for engagement and babies too! I love designing cards, it is so much fun to watch the designs evolve! I have also had the pleasure of designing some logos and business cards for a few people launching new businesses too, which is a different kind of fun!
I have also had the opportunity to do my first official "product" shoot for some cool new fishing lures. You can see the images at www.kegtackle.com. They are having a grand opening sale too! And I have another very exciting opportunity in the works, but it is just a little too soon to share those details, but I will very soon!

When a client orders a wall print, I know they LOVE it! And I think it is safe to assume that they want to share it with family and friends. So, I am excited to share that all wall prints will now come with a free low-resolution image to share online: Blogs, Facebook, MySpace, etc! The image will look like a canvas gallery wrap and will feature my web address. This is a great way to share the images you love, while easily earning referral credits! Here are a few samples, because a post without images is useless on this blog!

My only daughter is turning FIVE this Sunday! After the 30th time of hearing her saying "this is my last Monday as a 4 year old", I grabbed my camera and did a spur of the moment mini-session! It is so hard to believe that just five years ago, I had never looked into those big, blue eyes of hers. I would freeze her at this stage, if I could!

I rarely have photos of my oldest to share because he has this sixth sense that enables him to detect a camera within miles - and he runs the opposite direction! Tonight, he asked if we could take pictures... so I practiced with my new studio lights and got one of my favorite new images of him... the grunge one... for some reason, I love that it looks like a senior shot! I also thought this was a great example of how post-processing (aka: Photoshop) can drastically affect the final image. So, when working with any professional photographer that offers custom post-processing, it is important to communicate the look you are after... so many options!

I promised I would be ready to schedule sessions by the end of February, so I wanted to share my plan with you. Because I have a part-time job and three little ones, I can take on a very limited number of sessions in 2009. I am one of those people who hates to say “no”, but this year, I need to be very intentional about how many sessions I am working on each month. So, I have set aside a limited number of sessions I will be doing each month in 2009. In a few weeks, I will begin scheduling sessions for the remainder of the year. When I schedule your session, it needs to be for a specific month, but not day. I understand that you don’t know your schedule months in advance and I want to respect that and be flexible. Once you are scheduled for a specific month, I will contact you about 6 weeks in advance to finalize a specific date.

Beginning February 14th, I will be scheduling newborns for the remainder of 2009. They get first dibs, since their dates aren’t flexible! I love to photograph newborns in the first 7 days of life, so the time to schedule a session is before your baby is born. As if newborns weren’t sweet enough, all newborn sessions held within the first 7 days of life, will receive $30 off a hardcover leather album!

Beginning February 26th, returning clients can schedule any session for the remainder of 2009. And as a thank you for supporting me as I launched Divine Digital Design, please accept a $30 credit toward any Wall Collection or Album Collection.

Beginning March 2nd, any session can be scheduled.

Happy New Year, a few days early! There is something refreshing about beginning a new year and I look forward to watching 2009 unfold.
I have been asked if I am scheduling for Spring yet and the answer is "no". I wish I were that on top of things! I am not booking any additional sessions for January or February (unless it is a newborn - I can't resist!). I am going to focus on updating my website, investing in a new camera, and releasing some new products for 2009. I have learned so much this past year and am excited to offer products and collections that will meet your needs, so stay tuned! Near the end of February, I will be ready to schedule sessions for Spring and Summer 2009. So, a huge THANK YOU for your patience as I improve things a bit!

I am ecstatic (okay and a bit nervous!) to share that I was asked to be one of the photographers at Kari Layland (aka: amazing photographer) and Bob (aka: amazing fiance) Zahler's wedding in May! It is a busy time of year for portraits and I have been spending every free second on my computer post-processing images. Today was no exception, I was working on a client's proofs, when my daughter came into my office and said "Let's give me an updo and take pictures of me!" She is the dream daughter of a mother who loves photography! I jumped at the chance and 10 minutes later, we were having a mini-session. Had to share at least one of her first "updo"! It was a good reminder for me to not get too busy that I forget about all of the blessings around me. So, from one mother to another, as the holiday season approaches and your life gets busy, take time to enjoy your children and see how simply wonderful life is through their eyes.

Prints {Sprayed & Mounted}

The large wall prints that I offer are sprayed and mounted. I often get asked what that means, so I wanted to show you this recent example. The print is printed on textured professional grade photographic paper, adhered to a stiff matboard-type backing (mounted), and sprayed for UV protection and to resist dust and scratches. While this obviously costs more than simply printing on traditional photo paper, I think the benefits far outweigh the additional cost. Large, wall prints are an investment and this is one step in protecting that investment and ensuring that it will not get damaged as it is handled and displayed over the years. And my absolute favorite thing is that it gives you the option to:
1. Frame it without glass over it, removing all glare that glass gives, so you can clearly see the print from anywhere in the room, no matter what angle you are viewing it from. {oooooh}
2. You can display the print in a contemporary way, such as on an easel. {aaaaah}

I rarely get a chance to work with seniors, so this opportunity was extra exciting for me! Although, I keep asking myself, "when did Seniors get so stinkin' hot?" I am so embarassed at my own senior portraits and just have to keep reminding myself that big bangs and perms were "in" then....

Had to share this recent portrait! I LOVE it because of his smile - one tooth missing and his first "big kid" tooth coming in...it truly captures the transition between being a little kid and a big boy! It gets me all sentimental and makes me want to stop the hands of time on my own little ones!

Holiday Cards

It is very hard to think about holiday cards already! However, in the past few weeks, clients have already ordered and received their holiday cards and I am starting to receive a lot of inquiries about holiday packages, etc! So, I wanted to let everyone know that, YES, I will be offering holiday card packages this year, however I will be limiting the number of projects I accept (so I can maintain my own sanity during the most amazing season of the year!). I still have some details to work out, so check back. For now, I wanted to post just a few holiday card samples.
For anyone new, since last year, I offer two types of cards: photographic - printed on photo paper like offered most everywhere -OR- unique, high-quality press-printed cards in flat or folded - these are like greeting cards you find in stores.
